Even though the light is the fastest thing known in the universe, it’s still too slow, given the scale of the cosmos. Light travels at about 300,000 km/s in vacuum. Because of the finite light speed, everything we see in the universe is how it looked in the past. If something is five light years away, it means that light took five years to reach us from that object. So we are actually seeing how that object appeared five years ago.
